My Shop Monday Winner - Jacks Gentleman's Barber Shop

Traditional, quality service at Jack’s Gentlemen’s Barbers

A man behaves differently when he is well groomed. The world acts differently towards him and he in turn gives the world his best.

For the past fifteen years Jack’s Barbers has been providing the male population in the Hunstanton area with stylish cuts and precision grooming services, building up a loyal clientele along the way. Owner Jack Schmollmann explains how the barbering firm is moving forward.

At the beginning of September 2015 I moved to my new, larger premises adjacent to Hunstanton’s Town Hall. The Annexe was formerly used as the Coastguard Station in Hunstanton and more latterly for offices. Hunstanton is a thriving and beautiful Victorian seaside town in Norfolk that gives us a great local year-round business that is supplemented with second-home owners and the holiday trade.

The project, including obtaining the relevant planning permission took a year and now completely renovated and refurbished, this Victorian building houses the business re-branded as Jack’s Gentlemen’s Barbers and is complete with red-and-white-striped poles outside. It is a traditional, Victorian-style men's barbers, with wood panelling, reclaimed wood and restored parquet flooring.

It was important to respect the original features of the building and create the kind of barber shop your grandfather would have visited, with the comfort and quality you would expect including Koken and Belmont Barber chairs and Victorian pews and display cabinets. Frank Sinatra playing adds to the 'old school cool' theme. As a really personal touch I have Victorian pictures of my ancestors on the walls; some with magnificent moustaches! We have five stations equipped with backwash sinks that are used by spinning and reclining the chairs. We try to encourage clients to use the extra service as well as buying the products.

Currently there are two barbers and one apprentice working in the business and we are proud to provide a quality traditional barbering service for everyone; our tag line is ‘For Gentlemen and their Sons’. We offer haircuts, beard trims and shaves on a walk-in basis and also offer an evening appointment service.

I have planned the new shop to make it comfortable and accessible for our clients; there are two entrances, and for customers arriving by car we have free reserved parking, a real benefit to the business in a town centre location.

Our aim is to preserve a proud heritage of good grooming for men of all ages and we are open early to make it easier for clients to have a haircut or shave before work.

The formula is working very well; looking to the future we aim to reduce waiting times, introduce daytime appointments with on-line booking and are currently looking to recruit another full-time barber.

Winston Churchill once said: “I am easily satisfied with the very best” and we aim to be the very best.
