Welcome to Ian Henry's Barbers........
We are Ian Henrys barbers! Tens of thousands of haircuts and scores of different trends have passed through the door of the shop formally known as The Spur Saloon.
Established in 1928 Ian Henrys has been around for a staggering 88 years! Formally a house, the bottom was made into the shop by Mr Clark. Then called Clarks, he built the business up to make way for Mr Tree in about 1945. When Mr Tree died it was taken over by Ron in 1962 who took on a young Barber Called Ian Henry.
Ian recalled there were 6 Barber shops in Cosham at that time. Plenty of haircuts to go round as many would come in every week to keep their hair fresh and sharp for the weekend. Then came the 70’s where trade was at its worse. The penchant for long hair, perms and rod Stewart style haircuts sounded the death knell for countless Barbers but because of Ian’s previous training as a Hairdresser, the shop survived. By the end of the decade Ian Henrys was the only Barbers left in Cosham as the others had folded.
Ian took over the shop in 1980, changing the name of the shop and business flourished. He has done 4 generations of the same family with most still coming in today.
After 53 years working in the same shop Ian retired, aged 71, last year but he still comes in Tuesdays to keep his hand in. There are 6 of us that work here with about a staggering 160 yrs experience between us! We do every style of hair with Flat Tops still being very popular in the shop.
Longest Member of staff is me [Bev] with Charmayne [who’s just taken over the shop] a close 2nd. We are like family with plenty of Banter and laughs and this reflects on our loyal customers that have been coming to us for years. There are plans for Ian Henrys [the name stays] but Charmayne would like to keep the place as traditional as possible and new signage will be up soon.
There’s only one other shop in Cosham [a shoe shop] that has stood the test of time. Barbershops in Cosham have gone full circle now since the loss of the other Barbers in the 70’s with there now being 6 more Barbershops but with Ian henrys being established and staff being open and actively partaking in further training no doubt the shop will continue to thrive and survive for a further 88 years!
